The Greater Austin Underage Drinking Prevention Council invites you to help our youth grow up safe and healthy.
WHAT: The mission of the Council is to create a safe and healthy environment for the youth of our community by reducing underage access to alcohol in the Greater Austin area.
WHO: The Council is a coalition comprised of community members, law enforcement, representatives from prevention organizations, schools, parent groups, businesses, youth advocacy and services organization, the faith-based organizations, government and social services.
Members come together to formulate strategies to reduce the incidence and impact of underage drinking in the Greater Austin area.
HOW : Our key strategies to reduce access of alcohol to minors include:
- networking and information sharing among Council partners,
- retailer compliance checks and retailer education,
- underage drinking party (social hosting) prevention and enforcement.
Supporting area law enforcement with Retailer Compliance Checks. Educating retailers about checking ID’s and the law regarding selling to persons under 21. As a parent or school: Hosting alcohol-free parties and other alcohol-free activities for youth. Speaking to parents and the community about the dangers and legal consequences of hosting underage drinking parties. Sharing information with law enforcement on underage drinking prevention strategies and controlled party dispersal trainings. Educating the judicial system on the importance of applying appropriate sentencing to violators of underage drinking laws
