Opinion: Corona partnership with University of Texas misguided and may lead to underage drinking

This gallery contains 1 photo.

“Earlier this year, the University of Texas Athletics Department announced its new partnership with Corona Extra, making the beer an official sponsor of the Texas Longhorns. Many people view drinking as a traditional part of the college experience, but often ignore the potential consequences of promoting alcohol on campus. A July 12 column by Emma Berdanier outlined some of the potential pitfalls of a partnership with Corona Extra, and there is substantial evidence that the partnership between the University of Texas and Corona Extra is misguided, writes Dr. Sachin Kamble, Daily Texas Opinion Page (Sept. 24, 2017). The vast majority of undergraduates are underage, which makes them susceptible to the risky behaviors and negative consequences that come with higher alcohol consumption. Continue reading

This gallery contains 1 photo.

Do not get drunk and go home with someone you don’t know. Anyone who has followed the recent turmoil knows that binge drinking is the common denominator in reported incidents of campus assault. A drunken stupor never justifies criminal behavior, but staying sober can help avoid dangerous or compromising situations. And, if you are assaulted, seek immediate help from someone you trust who is NOT affiliated with the college. Remember, the college’s interests are not your own. Call your parents or another trusted adult, call 911, seek medical attention, or call a rape hotline. The Justice Department estimates approximately 1 in 53 college women will be victims of rape or sexual assault Continue reading

“First, let’s end the pretense about what alcohol is. A mixed cocktail isn’t a soft drink. A beer isn’t the equivalent of a bottle of Gatorade. Sipping a glass of wine isn’t the same as sipping a glass of iced tea,” says Dr. Joe Godfrey, Executive Director, Alabama Citizens Action Program. “We should stop talking about alcoholic beverages as if they are no more harmful than milk or coffee.” Continue reading
