Do not get drunk and go home with someone you don’t know. Anyone who has followed the recent turmoil knows that binge drinking is the common denominator in reported incidents of campus assault. A drunken stupor never justifies criminal behavior, but staying sober can help avoid dangerous or compromising situations. And, if you are assaulted, seek immediate help from someone you trust who is NOT affiliated with the college. Remember, the college’s interests are not your own. Call your parents or another trusted adult, call 911, seek medical attention, or call a rape hotline. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo says, “If you’re over serving and being irresponsible we are going to identify that fact and we’re developing every legal strategy to hold you accountable,” added Acevedo. Acevedo calls it a multi-layered approach to solving Austin’s alcohol problem. “Apparently intoxicated” 12-year-old girl sexually assaulted by Austin man after he offers car ride

A 26-year-old Austin man is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl who police found intoxicated in his vehicle following a traffic stop in Austin. According to a report by KVUE-TV, the man offered a ride to the girl and then sexually assaulted her. “The officer said the victim was ‘apparently intoxicated,’ and she had been vomiting in the vehicle, according to the affidavit. Society’s drinking problem goes unchecked, over-serving alcohol at venues becomes normal for youths and adults both

A parent gets a call saying their kid is in a hospital or in jail, is raped, or is killed driving home, there is always a cacophony of “How did this happen?” It happens because venues often look the other way while people get drunk or stoned — they do not do enough to stop it from happening.

It’s not just an underage drinking problem. It’s a societal drinking problem. Adults drink all day and night. Young people do the same. Adults play tailgating drinking games. Young people play their own games with maybe a little more alcohol and some pills to help the buzz along. Continue reading
